Porsche 911 Gate Shift
Fits 911 72-86* *with the 915, 5-speed transaxle. 1972 cars require an upgrade to a later shift housing
If you have a 911, you know the factory shift mechanism doesn't provide a lot of feedback. In fact, shifting the 915 takes some care and practice to avoid hazardous shifts to the wrong gear. A missed shift can result in severe engine damage. Shifting from 5th to 4th sometimes results in 2nd gear being selected and a shift from 4th to 3rd sometimes results in 1st gear (ouch!).
The factory provides a spring-loaded mechanism to identify the 5th and reverse gate. However, no such device identifies the other gears. The Gate Shift Kit uses 3rd and 4th gears as the default shift plane and adds a spring-tension mechanism to define 1st and 2nd gears (like 5th/Rev.). The spring tension added to the mechanism provides needed feedback and helps position the shift lever for the correct gear selection. In addition, the Gate Shift Kit provides "gates" on the top carrier plate for 1st and 2nd gears to mirror the existing gates for 5th and Reverse.
The purpose of these "gates" is to relieve spring tension (while in gear ) on the shift mechanism inside the transaxle, a feature other (and more expensive) kits don't address. The Gate Shift Kit parts are made from high quality, anodized aircraft grade aluminum and chrome moly/chrome vanadium steel components. Fasteners and hardware are stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
You have to experience the difference this has on the shift feel between the factory version and the Gate Shift modification. No more blown shifts. DIY installation takes about an hour. Works with all factory shift housings as well as most aftermarket short shift kits. Fits 1972-1986 911 Porsche with the 915, 5-speed transaxle. 1972 cars require an upgrade to a later shift housing.
